Java Developer

Gaston Schul (Various locations possible, preferably NL or DE)

This is your chance to join us in building the future of Gaston Schul. To further expand our digital services, we are looking for a Java Developer to join our international development team. Our team is looking for reinforcement to further develop the great tools they have built to help our customers and colleagues doing their work in the most efficient way. We offer you the possibility to join a small team where you will have influence and high impact on the things we do and deliver.

What will you be doing?

You will be joining our IT Development department. We are responsible for developing applications, integrations and tools that make the everyday work of our colleagues and customers more efficient. The main focus lies on Enterprise Application Integration, Integrations with third parties (customers, customs, suppliers) and internal application development.

We are supporting all of our locations which means you will be working on projects that can be running in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Norway (travelling not required). You will mainly be active in the back-end, but you will have the opportunity to apply and extend your skills to a broader perspective like micro-frontends and streaming applications as well.

As a back-end Java developer your focus is on designing and delivering new functionalities but also analyzing and solving problems in existing functionalities. You will build, test and document the software, contributing to the overall modular architecture based on Karaf OSGi.

You will work with the technology of (amongst others) Red Hat, IBM, Eclipse and Apache and will be working in the field of integration, API’s, microservices and events, all of this in a hybrid on-premise / cloud architecture.

What are you bringing?

You have a clear view on integrations and quickly oversee the connection between different stakeholders. You understand your own capabilities and know what you can and cannot do.

We are looking for a developer who has unlocked the secrets of most of the following standards and technologies:

  • JavaEE
  • SQL
  • ReST
  • Enterprise Application Integration
  • Apache ActiveMQ, CXF, Camel, Karaf
  • Maven
  • Bitbucket
  • Jenkins
  • Junit

We are asking for about 3 years of experience, but if you have either lost count of the years or can convince us that your mindset and other skills make up for the missing years, we are of course interested in talking to you as well.

It would be great if you are already familiar with OSGi and modular software architecture. What is however most important for us is your eagerness to learn the principles we apply in our daily work. Besides that, we also want to learn from you and continue building with the skills that you bring along.

We prefer our new hire to be based in either the Netherlands or Germany but could consider other locations as well. Our development colleagues are now mainly active in Venlo (NL), Duisburg (DE), Emmerich (DE), Rotterdam (NL) and Schiphol (NL). We offer hybrid / remote work possibilities but think it is important to see each other as well, so we prefer someone to be near any of our mentioned offices. Please have a look at our website for an overview of all our offices:

Besides the mentioned experience we are looking for someone that ticks most of the following boxes:

  • Completed higher education (IT related Bachelor or Master), or self-taught with the right work experience and attitude
  • Strong affinity with technology
  • Analytical thinking
  • Critical on quality, but pragmatic where necessary
  • Good communication and social skills
  • Good command of the English language (if your English is a bit rusty but you can speak Dutch and/or German we can help you polish it up)

What can we offer you?

  • Pretty nice colleagues (if we may say so ourselves)
  • Join a family business with family values
  • Join a small international team with Dutch, Belgian and German developers and consultants
  • Have high impact with the things you do
  • Possibility for hybrid working (we like to see each other as well of course)
  • Don’t just develop software, develop yourself as well
  • Terms and conditions of employment will depend on the country where you will be based, contact us for more information
