What is AEO – and why should you care?
The AEO framework was established by the World Customs Organization (WCO) as part of its SAFE Framework of Standards. It is built on a clear principle: partnership between customs authorities and the private sector to secure and streamline global trade.
In the EU, AEO status signals that your business is a trusted partner in the international supply chain. It certifies that you meet rigorous customs compliance standards, maintain robust internal controls, and play an active role in securing goods movements across borders. The AEO status is established in the Union Customs Code and will continue to hold that status under the Modernised Customs Code, which is due to come into effect in 2028.
Therefore, if your business is involved in customs-related activities, such as importing, exporting, logistics, or warehousing, you are eligible to apply. And increasingly, you will find that having AEO status is not just an advantage – it is becoming an expectation.
Without AEO, your business could face longer clearance times, more frequent inspections, and delays that cost you money – and customers.
Types of AEO permits
There are three types of AEO permits within the EU:
- AEO Customs Simplifications (AEO-C)
Focuses on procedural simplifications, faster clearances, and reduced administrative burdens. - AEO Security and Safety (AEO-S)
Enhances supply chain security and grants recognition from international partners. - AEO Full (AEO-F)
Combines both benefits of AEO-C and AEO-S – offering the full suite of advantages.
The right choice depends on your business model, your position in the supply chain, and the level of simplification or recognition you require.
Strategic benefits of AEO status
Once authorised, AEO-certified businesses enjoy a range of benefits across all EU member states, including:
- Fewer physical and document-based customs checks
- Priority treatment during inspections
- Advance notice of customs controls
- Choice of inspection location
- Recognition by non-EU countries with mutual recognition agreements
In competitive industries where every hour counts, these advantages can be the difference between winning and losing a contract.
How to apply – and why to act now
Applications for AEO status must be submitted to the customs authority in the EU member state where your business's main customs activities are managed. The process involves a detailed self-assessment and audit, but the benefits far outweigh the investment.
At Gaston Schul, our Customs & Trade Advisors guide businesses through every step of the AEO application process, from readiness assessments and compliance checks to full audit preparation and post-certification support.
With regulatory landscapes evolving and global scrutiny intensifying, now is the time to act. Failing to adopt AEO status may not impact your operations today – but it very well might tomorrow.
